Canva's background remover only works on paid plans, so a free account gets
an upgrade prompt instead of a cutout. If you're cutting a subject out of a
photo rather than building a design, Android has free options. **Adobe
Express** offers background removal as a Quick Action in its Android app. On a
supported Samsung Galaxy phone running One UI 5.1 or later, **Image Clipper**
lifts a subject straight out of the Gallery app. The browser fallback many
people reach for, remove.bg, is owned by Canva, and its standalone site closes
on 1 December 2026. If your cutouts keep coming out ragged, the source photo is
usually the problem. That's where SensePose fits: it's an AI camera that
enhances every photo on the phone as you take it. It doesn't remove
backgrounds itself, so you cut out in one of the tools above.

This page helps you pick a tool if you're editing photos, not making layouts:
product shots, profile pictures, a pet, something to turn into a sticker. The
removal steps themselves are in our guide on
[how to remove the background from a photo on Android](/blog/remove-background-from-photo-android).

## Why Canva's background remover isn't free

Canva is a design suite, and BG Remover is one feature in its paid bundle,
next to premium templates and stock, brand kits, resizing and transparent
downloads. That bundle is good value for daily design work, and a lot to pay
for one button.

Canva's help center spells out the limits:

- **Paid plans only.** Free accounts can't use BG Remover.
- **Size caps.** It works on photos under 9 MB, and an upload above 10
megapixels is downscaled to 10 MP once the background is removed.
- **Online only.** Processing happens online, so it needs a connection.

There's a second catch. Downloading a PNG with a transparent background is
also a premium feature, so a free account couldn't save a transparent cutout
from Canva even if it had one.

## Free Canva background remover alternatives on Android

Free plans shift, so check the app before you count on it for a big batch.

| Tool | Free background removal | Watermark on free output | The catch | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Adobe Express** | Yes, as a Quick Action | No | Adobe account needed; video background removal is Premium | Free cutouts plus templates |
| **Samsung Image Clipper** | Yes, built into Gallery | No | Selected Galaxy phones on One UI 5.1+ only | Galaxy owners |
| **Pixelcut** | Limited | No | HD exports and batch are mostly Pro | Product photos at volume |
| **Photoroom** | Limited | Branding on free exports | Batch and high-res need Pro | Product photos at volume |
| **Picsart** | Cutout tool, some features paid | Some features | Ads and AI credits | Cutouts plus stickers and effects |
| **SensePose** | No (a camera, not a remover) | No watermark | No cutout tool; pair it with a remover | Shooting the photo you'll cut out |
| **remove.bg (web)** | Preview only, up to 0.25 MP | No | Standalone site closes 1 Dec 2026 | One-offs until then |
| **Canva** (baseline) | No | n/a | 10 MP cap even when paid | People already designing in Canva Pro |

Each free route costs you something: a smaller file, a sign-in, a watermark,
or being tied to one phone brand.

## Which alternative to pick

### If you also make designs: Adobe Express

Adobe Express is the closest swap, because it's another template-based design
app. On Google Play, its listing puts background removal under Quick Actions,
and the Premium list names only *video* background removal. Sign in with an
Adobe account, then save the cutout or drop it straight into a template.
Adobe's own pages don't fully agree on which edits stay free, so confirm in the
app before you count on it.

### On a Samsung Galaxy: Image Clipper

Samsung's Gallery app has had Image Clipper since One UI 5.1. It debuted on
the Galaxy S23 and later reached mid-range models such as the Galaxy A53. Press
and hold the subject until it animates, then copy it, share it or save it as a
PNG with a transparent background. It also works on photos taken with other
phones or saved from the web. It's a single-step tool, though: what the phone
detects is what you get, so fine detail like hair or a thin strap can get
trimmed. Availability depends on the model and One UI version.

### If you sell products: Photoroom or Pixelcut

Canva wasn't built for catalog work. Photoroom and Pixelcut were. Both remove
backgrounds in batches and put products on white at marketplace sizes, with
their full batch modes behind a paid plan. Pixelcut's free tier exports
without a watermark but limits how many removals you get. Our
[Photoroom alternative guide](/blog/photoroom-alternative-android) compares
the seller tools.

### If you want a cleaner photo to cut out: SensePose

SensePose is an AI camera app for Android that enhances every photo on the
phone as you take it: better colour and tone, a mild denoise for cleaner low
light, and AI face enhance on supported phones. It's point-and-shoot and takes
a single frame. A cleaner, less noisy source photo can give a remover a clearer
edge to find. You pick a Natural or Punchy look in settings.

SensePose does not remove backgrounds or edit photos, and it only enhances
photos you take in it, not ones already in your gallery, so you still cut out in
Adobe Express, Image Clipper or another remover. It's on Google Play, needs
Android 8.0 or later, and is made by Profazia. The first 5 enhanced photos are
free; after that, photos still save free at full resolution, and one small
payment unlocks enhanced photos forever. There's no watermark.

Its limits are on the editing and design side. There
are no cutouts, templates, text layouts or batch mode, and it won't invent an AI backdrop
behind your subject. It's built for budget and
mid-range Android phones. On a flagship with strong camera processing, it adds
less.

SensePose is a camera app, not a pose-estimation, skeleton-tracking or
motion-capture library, and it's unrelated to DensePose and to SenseTime's
2017 SensePose technology.

### For a one-off before December: remove.bg

remove.bg still runs in your phone's browser for now: upload a photo and
download the result. The free download is a preview of up to 0.25 megapixels,
fine for a chat sticker or a small thumbnail but too small for print. HD
downloads use paid credits, and a free account gets one bonus credit.

It won't stay that way. Canva bought Kaleido, the company behind remove.bg, in
2021, and remove.bg's standalone site closes on 1 December 2026, with its
background removal moving into Canva. So the free browser route ends, and what
replaces it is Canva's remover, which needs a paid plan.

## Why cutouts fail: it's usually the photo

Every remover, Canva's included, looks for one thing: a clear edge between
subject and background. On many budget Android phones that edge is damaged
before any editor sees it. Indoors, the stock camera tends to pick a slow
shutter, which softens outlines with motion blur, then applies heavy noise
reduction, which smears the fine strands of hair, fur and fabric that a mask
depends on. In bright scenes, highlights can clip to pure white, and a white
product melts into a white wall.

Switching removers rarely fixes that, because the remover can only find what
the photo shows. A backdrop in a different tone from the subject, more light
and a braced phone help most. On a budget phone, a camera with less aggressive
noise smoothing is the other half, because it keeps more of the fine edges. The
[background removal guide](/blog/remove-background-from-photo-android) covers
edge checks and hard cases such as glass, jewelry chains and reflective metal.

## How to keep using Canva free with your cutouts

Canva's free plan still lets you upload your own images, so do the cutout
somewhere else and bring it in:

1. **Cut out the subject** in Adobe Express or Image Clipper. (If you shot it in
SensePose, there's no watermark to show in the design.)
2. **Save it as a PNG** with a transparent background.
3. **Upload it** to Canva's Uploads and place it on your template. The
transparency carries through inside the design.
4. **Download the finished design** as a normal PNG or JPG.

Only downloading with a *transparent* background needs Pro, so give the design
a solid or photo background and the free plan covers the rest.

## Where your photo goes

Most removers, Canva's included, process your photo online, so the image
leaves your phone. That's fine for a product shot. For photos of children, IDs
or documents, check where the file goes and how long it's kept before you
upload.

In SensePose, enhancing runs on the phone: there's no account and no cloud
processing, your photos never leave your phone, and enhancing works offline.

## When Canva Pro is worth paying for

If you design every week, Pro is a reasonable deal. BG Remover comes bundled
with premium templates, transparent downloads, brand kits, resizing and bulk
removal for folders of up to 50 images, so the remover becomes a small part of
what you pay for. Canva also offers a Pro trial.

If you only need cutouts from photos now and then, Pro is the expensive route
to a job the free tools above already do.

## Canva isn't a photo editor either

Canva is built to lay photos out, not to edit them. Its adjust tools cover
brightness, contrast, saturation, filters and simple area selections, which is
fine for a social post. For real tonal work, Snapseed costs nothing, shows no
ads and needs no sign-in or subscription, and it has curves, selective edits,
healing and RAW DNG support. Lightroom Mobile is stronger on color. Our

## FAQ

### Is Canva's background remover free?
No. Canva's help center says BG Remover is available with paid plans only, so
free accounts see an upgrade prompt. It also needs an internet connection and
works on photos under 9 MB. Free alternatives on Android include Adobe Express
and, on supported Samsung Galaxy phones, Image Clipper in the Gallery app.

### How do I remove a background in Canva without Pro?
Do the cutout in another tool and bring it into Canva. Remove the background in
Adobe Express or Samsung Gallery's Image Clipper, save it as a
transparent PNG, then upload it to Canva and place it in your design.
Downloading the finished design with a transparent background still needs Pro.

### What is the best free alternative to Canva's background remover on Android?
Adobe Express is the closest swap. Its Google Play listing names background
removal among its Quick Actions and puts only video background removal under
Premium. On supported Galaxy phones with One UI 5.1 or later, Image Clipper in
the Gallery app lifts subjects for free. remove.bg works in a phone browser,
but free downloads are capped at 0.25 megapixels and its standalone site closes
on 1 December 2026.

### Is remove.bg part of Canva?
Yes. Canva acquired Kaleido, the Austrian company behind remove.bg, in 2021.
remove.bg says its standalone website closes on 1 December 2026 at 9:00 CET,
with background removal moving into Canva. Until then it still offers free
preview downloads of up to 0.25 megapixels. After that, the route is Canva's
own BG Remover, which needs a paid plan.

### Does Canva's background remover reduce image quality?
It can reduce resolution. Canva says an uploaded photo above 10 megapixels is
downscaled to 10 MP after its background is removed. Many phones save photos
larger than 10 megapixels by default, so expect some downscaling on
full-resolution shots.

### Can SensePose replace Canva?
No. SensePose is an AI camera app: it has no background removal, no editing of
existing photos, and no templates, text layouts or design tools. It enhances
every photo on the phone as you take it, with better colour and tone, cleaner
low light and AI face enhance on supported phones, and there is no watermark.
Some people shoot in SensePose, cut out in Adobe Express or Image Clipper, then
design in Canva's free plan.
