A camera app that keeps crashing on Android is almost always a software
problem. The usual culprits are a corrupted cache or settings file, a missing
permission, another app holding the camera, a bad update, low storage or RAM,
heat, or a third-party app getting in the way. Start with a force stop and a
restart, then clear the camera app's cache and data. Still crashing? Work
down the fixes below. Blame the hardware only when *every* camera app shows a
black screen or "Camera failed."

## Quick triage: when does it crash?

When it crashes tells you more than how often. Find your pattern:

- **Crashes the moment you open it.** Corrupted cache or data, a bad update, a
missing permission, or another app already using the camera.
- **Crashes only in one mode** (front, night, video, zoom). A mode-specific
bug or one failing sensor; test that mode in a second camera app.
- **Closes after you stop using it for a while.** Often this isn't a crash at
  all (see the next section).
- **Shuts off during long video or in the sun.** Overheating protection.
- **Only a third-party app crashes** (GCam port, Instagram, a banking app's
scanner). An app compatibility problem or Android's memory killer. It is
  not your phone's camera.

## Auto-close after inactivity is not a crash

Samsung's camera closes on its own after about two minutes without
interaction, by design, to save battery and limit heat. If it only kicks you
out after you've left it sitting on the viewfinder, that's the timer.

On Samsung you can extend it. Install **Camera Assistant** (through Good Lock
or directly from the Galaxy Store) and change the "Auto-off camera when idle"
timer. On other brands, check the camera's own settings for a timeout or
power-saving option.

## Fix 1: Force stop and restart the phone

A stuck camera service can make every camera app crash.

1. Go to **Settings → Apps → Camera → Force stop**.
2. Restart the phone (a real restart, not just locking the screen).

That releases whatever process was stuck holding the camera. Boring, but it
fixes more crashes than anything else on this list.

## Fix 2: Clear cache, then storage, then reset settings

Corrupted cache files are the most common cause of crash-on-open.

1. **Settings → Apps → Camera → Storage → Clear cache.** Try the camera.
2. If it still crashes: **Clear storage / Clear data.** This resets every
camera setting (resolution, grid lines, watermark, saved modes) to default.
   Your photos are untouched.
3. If the app opens long enough, use **Settings → Reset settings** inside the
   camera app itself.

## Fix 3: Check permissions and what else is using the camera

Android lets only one app use a camera sensor at a time. If the camera app
can't get it, many versions crash instead of showing an error.

- **Permissions:** Settings → Apps → Camera → Permissions. Allow Camera and
Microphone, which video needs. Location matters if geotagging is on. Some
  older versions also need Photos/Storage.
- **Apps holding the camera:** video-call apps (WhatsApp, Meet, Zoom) running in
the background, a flashlight widget, screen recorders, QR scanners and
"camera blocker" privacy apps. Close them, or force stop them.
- **Privacy toggle:** on Android 12+, check that the Camera access tile in Quick
  Settings isn't switched off.

## Fix 4: It started after an update

Crashes that begin the day after an update are rarely a coincidence.

- **Update the camera app** if a newer version is out. A fix may already
  exist.
- **Uninstall updates:** Settings → Apps → Camera → ⋮ → Uninstall updates. This
rolls back to the factory version. Not every phone offers it for the camera.
- **Disable and re-enable:** on phones that allow it (including Pixel),
disable the Camera app in Settings → Apps, then enable it again. It is a
common community suggestion for crash-on-open after an update.
- **Wipe the cache partition** where your phone supports it (many Samsung,
Motorola and older phones, from recovery mode). It clears leftover system
cache from the update without touching your data.
- **Wait for the patch** if forums show the same complaint for your model.

## Fix 5: Low storage, low RAM and the memory killer

The camera needs free space to write photos and a lot of RAM to process them.
Multi-frame HDR and night modes are especially demanding.

- Keep at least **1–2 GB free** on internal storage. Below that, saving fails
  and some camera apps crash.
- Close heavy background apps (games, browsers with dozens of tabs).
- **Why third-party apps crash after taking a photo:** when an app like a
marketplace or banking app opens the system camera and you take a picture,
Android may kill the *original* app in the background to free memory. On
phones with little RAM this is more likely. When you
return, the app restarts and looks like it crashed. The fault is the app's
memory handling, not your camera. Freeing RAM first helps.

## Fix 6: Overheating and battery saver

Android shuts the camera down when the phone gets too hot, and 4K video,
long recordings and direct sun are the fastest way there.

- Let the phone cool, take it out of its case, and avoid charging while
  recording.
- Drop video resolution or frame rate (4K60 → 1080p30) for long clips.
- Turn off **battery saver / ultra power saving** and test again. Some
aggressive modes restrict camera features or close the app.

## Fix 7: Boot into Safe Mode to find a conflicting app

Safe Mode starts Android with all third-party apps disabled. If the camera
works in Safe Mode, a downloaded app is causing the crash.

1. Hold the power button, then long-press **Power off** until "Safe mode"
   appears. Methods vary by brand.
2. Open the camera and use it the way that normally crashes.
3. If it's stable, restart normally and uninstall recently added apps one by
one. Usual suspects: beauty or selfie apps, screen dimmers and blue-light
filters, overlay apps (floating bubbles, screen recorders), and "cleaner" or
   battery-booster apps.

If it crashes in Safe Mode too, suspect the stock app, firmware or hardware.

## Fix 8: GCam ports crash because they weren't built for your phone

Google Camera ports are modified builds of the Pixel camera app. They expect
Pixel hardware, and they crash on other phones far more often than a stock
camera does. The usual reasons:

- **Wrong config or libs:** each port needs a config (XML) tuned for your exact
sensor. With the wrong one it crashes on open or in specific lenses.
- **Camera2 API level:** GCam needs your phone to expose the camera through the
Camera2 API at "Full" or "Level 3" support. Many budget phones report
"Limited" or "Legacy," so HDR+ or night mode crashes or never works. Check
yours with our [Camera2 API hardware level guide](/blog/camera2-api-hardware-level-check).
- **Wrong port version** for your Android version or chipset (Snapdragon vs
  MediaTek vs Exynos).

If no port/config combination stays stable, see
[GCam port not working? What to use instead](/blog/gcam-port-not-working-alternative).
We also compare the approaches in [GCam vs an AI camera app](/blog/gcam-vs-ai-camera-app).

## Fix 9: Signs it's hardware

It's probably hardware if:

- **Every** camera app shows a black screen, including in Safe Mode
- you get "Camera failed" or "Can't connect to camera" everywhere
- one lens is black in all apps while others work

Before a factory reset, back up photos and data. A reset rules out firmware
corruption once and for all. If the camera still fails afterwards, it needs
repair: often a loose ribbon cable or a failed camera module.

## Summary: symptom, cause and fix

| Crashes in one mode (front, night, video, zoom) | Mode-specific bug or one failing sensor | Clear data, update; test the mode in another app |
| Closes after ~2 min idle (Samsung) | Auto-off timer by design | Extend it in Camera Assistant |
| Shuts off during long video / in sun | Overheating | Cool down, lower resolution (Fix 6) |
| A third-party app restarts after taking a photo | Memory killer | Free RAM and storage (Fix 5) |
| Works in Safe Mode only | Conflicting third-party app | Uninstall recent overlay/beauty/cleaner apps (Fix 7) |
| GCam port crashes | Wrong config, Camera2 level, wrong port | Change config/port, check Camera2 (Fix 8) |
| Black screen in every app | Hardware or deep firmware fault | Back up, factory reset, then repair (Fix 9) |

## When a different camera app is the practical answer

If the stock camera is fine but you installed a GCam port for better photos,
and that port keeps crashing, swapping to an app built for standard Android
camera APIs is often easier than chasing configs.

- **Open Camera** is the honest first suggestion if stability and manual
control are what you want. It's free, open source, ad-free, and uses the
Camera2 API for manual ISO, shutter and focus.
- **SensePose** is for when you want an AI camera rather than sliders. It's
point-and-shoot and enhances every photo on the phone as you take it: better
color and tone, cleaner low light, and AI face enhance on supported phones.
It runs on Android 8.0+, including budget phones with 2 GB of RAM, and the
first 5 enhanced photos are free. It won't fix crashes in other apps.

## FAQ

### How do I stop the camera app from closing on Android?

First check whether it's crashing or just timing out. Samsung closes the
camera after about two minutes idle by design, and Camera Assistant can extend
that. For real crashes, force stop the app, restart the phone, then clear the
camera's cache and, if needed, its storage. If it continues, check
permissions, free up storage, and test in Safe Mode.

### Why does my phone keep kicking me out of my camera app?

The most common reasons are the idle auto-off timer, overheating protection,
low RAM, or another app taking over the camera. If it only happens during long
video or in the sun, it's heat. If a third-party app restarts after you take a
photo, Android's memory killer closed it in the background.

### Why does the Samsung camera app keep closing on my phone?

If it closes after you leave it idle, that's Samsung's auto-off feature;
change the timer in Camera Assistant from Good Lock or the Galaxy Store. If it
crashes while in use, use Reset settings inside the camera. Then clear its
cache and data, and reboot. Crashes that start after a One UI update are often
fixed by the next camera or firmware update, or by wiping the cache partition.

### My Android camera app has stopped working. What can I do to fix it?

Restart the phone, then clear the camera app's cache and data in Settings →
Apps → Camera → Storage. Check that Camera and Microphone permissions are
allowed and that no video-call, flashlight or screen-recorder app is using the
camera. If every camera app shows a black screen, even in Safe Mode, back up
and factory reset; if that fails, the camera module likely needs repair.

### Why does my camera keep shutting itself off?

Usually because the phone is too hot or because of a power-saving feature.
Long 4K recording and direct sun trigger thermal shutdown. Battery saver modes and idle timers can also close the camera. Let
the phone cool, lower the video resolution, and turn off aggressive power
saving.

### Why does my GCam port keep crashing?

GCam ports are built for Pixel hardware. On other phones they crash when the
config doesn't match your sensor, the port version doesn't fit your chipset or
Android version, or your phone's Camera2 API support is only Limited or
Legacy. Try a different port and config for your exact model. If none is
stable, a camera app built for standard Android APIs is the practical
alternative.
