Best Expert RAW Alternative for Android: Samsung Galaxy A07, A16, A17, A26

Samsung's Expert RAW app doesn't support the Galaxy A-series, and sideloading an Expert RAW APK won't change that. If you own an A07, A16, A17 or A26 and want what Expert RAW actually does, which is multi-frame RAW capture with manual control, you need a different app.

For most Galaxy A owners that app is SensePose. It has a real-time AI Pro Mode that reads each scene and sets ISO, EV, aperture and shutter live, the way a DSLR photographer would. What Expert RAW actually is

Expert RAW is a separate Samsung camera app, installed from the Galaxy Store, that combines two things:

1. Multi-frame RAW capture. Instead of saving one RAW exposure, it captures several frames and merges them into a single linear DNG. That keeps the editing flexibility of RAW while cutting the noise a single small-sensor RAW frame carries.
2. Full manual controls. ISO, shutter speed, white balance, focus and exposure compensation, with a histogram.

That pairing is the whole appeal. Plain RAW from a phone is noisy, and plain multi-frame processing gives you a baked-in JPEG. Expert RAW gives you the merge and the file.

Expert RAW supported devices: why the A-series is left out

Samsung limits Expert RAW to its flagship lines: the Galaxy S-series (S20 onward, by Samsung's own rollout notes) and the Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip phones. No Galaxy A model is on the supported list, including the A5x models that sit just below the S-series.

The reason is mostly product segmentation, with some hardware on top. Expert RAW leans on the flagship image signal processor and on sensor modes Samsung only exposes on its top phones. The A-series is sold on battery life, screen and price, and Samsung keeps its most advanced camera software as a flagship feature.

If you've found an "Expert RAW APK" on a mirror site, the Galaxy Store version checks the device model, and unofficial builds that bypass that come from an unknown publisher, don't get updates, and still depend on hardware paths your phone may not expose. We don't recommend it.

What the Galaxy A stock camera leaves on the table

The main sensors in current A-series phones are better than their photos suggest. From Samsung's spec sheets:

What holds these phones back is the software around the sensor:

• No Expert RAW, so no multi-frame RAW path at all.
• Limited or missing manual control. Depending on the model and One UI version, the stock app offers either no Pro mode or a trimmed one, and most owners shoot in auto with a brightness slider.
• A lighter HDR pipeline than the flagships. Budget Galaxy phones do run some automatic HDR, but in high-contrast scenes the common complaints are clipped skies, muddy shadows and over-sharpened, flat-looking 12.5MP files.

That's why many A-series owners go looking for Expert RAW in the first place. They don't want RAW for its own sake. They want the merge and the control.

What an Expert RAW alternative has to do

To actually replace Expert RAW on a Galaxy A phone, an app needs three things:

1. Manual exposure control over ISO, shutter and EV, so you can stop the auto camera from blowing out the sky.
2. RAW capture through Android's Camera2 API, which A-series phones expose.
3. A multi-frame merge, because a single RAW frame from a 1/2.76" or 1/2.8" sensor is noisy. Without the merge you get flexibility and more noise.

Most apps give you one or two of these. That's the gap.

The options, honestly

It installs from Google Play with no config files or model matching. That matters on Exynos Galaxy phones, where GCam ports are the usual workaround and the usual source of frustration.

2. Open Camera or ProShot: RAW and sliders, no merge

If you just want DNG files and manual sliders, Open Camera (free) and ProShot are solid and stable. The trade-off is that they save a single RAW frame, so in dim light you trade the stock camera's over-processing for visible noise. They also have no AI; every setting is yours to judge.

3. A GCam port: a gamble on Samsung

GCam ports do merge multiple frames, but they're built for Pixel hardware. On Exynos and MediaTek Galaxy A phones they often crash, lose lenses, or render color that's washed out or tinted, and they're mostly locked to auto exposure. If you find a config that works for your exact model and firmware, it can be good. It's just not a reliable Expert RAW replacement.

Getting good results on each phone

Where SensePose won't help

Honest scope, so you know what to expect:

• It can't change the hardware. The 2MP macro and depth cameras stay 2MP, and the ultra-wide stays softer than the main lens.
• Fast motion is hard for any burst merge. Running kids and pets are better served by a fast single shutter than a multi-frame capture.
• It's not a photo editor for old pictures. SensePose works at capture time. It doesn't upscale or restore photos already in your gallery.
• S-series and foldable owners won't see much difference. Those phones already have Expert RAW and a flagship multi-frame pipeline.

Why RAW and merging matter
